One of the largest Easter celebrations in Switzerland takes place in Mendrisio, and it has been held since the 17th century. The festivities consist of various events during Holy Week, culminating in two major processions. On Maundy Thursday, the so-called “Funziun di Giüdee” procession takes place, in which local amateur actors reenact Jesus’ journey to Calvary in the streets of the town. This is followed on Good Friday by the “Entierro”, the traditional Good Friday procession.
This procession focuses on the burial of Jesus Christ. Numerous religious groups take part by carrying statues of Jesus and the Mater Dolorosa — the Sorrowful Mother pierced by seven swords — through the alleys of Mendrisio, accompanied by music and a multitude of lanterns.
At the heart of the celebration, however, are the Transparenti — lantern-like artworks made of canvas, which are artistically painted with scenes from the Bible. These Transparenti, some of which are centuries old, adorn the route of the procession and the local churches. Their glowing light guides the procession along its way.
